68 Year Old Grandmother Tasered In Ohio

Allen Gwinn  2005-12-07 20:47

In a classic case of "he should-a known it would make national news headlines," Franklin Ohio Police Lieutenant Wayne Bowling nailed 68-year-old Beverly Kidwell with his taser. Kidwell got tired of waiting in the lobby to be arrested on an assault warrant.

According to Franklin Police (who are preparing a press release), Kidwell apparently tried to leave and that's when Bowling drew his taser and fired.  Five times.  Surveillance pictures show Bowling shooting Kidwell while she was seated on a bench.

Kidwell was taken to an area hospital.

Fire him on the spot

There's no press release that can mitigate this. Incomprehensible! Yeah, she was a real threat. Yeah right. This is worse than HP cops who were ordered to cuff the 90-year old grandmother last year.

As a victim of police brutality and threats as a youth, my opinion may be tainted but I believe this happens more than it's reported.

Here's something to think about - how many times do people get tasered and no one sees it, there is no videotape, and no witnesses are present?

Contrary to your belief no

Contrary to your belief no one has to see it. Every time we use the taser on someone it records the date, time , and duration of the "shock". If there was something inappropriate about the way it was used the Taser will let IAD know.

Taser records

Just out of curiosity, is this on all tasers? Does IAD review each and every taser discharge (or only if someone complains)? Is this policy pretty much nationwide?

Hey, I know I complain about the way we do lots of things here in Dallas, but at least we've never tasered a grandmother that I know of!

States and Local Governments still control.

Taser policy is set by each individual department. There is no national policy for the Taser. The Federal government would have a difficult time reconciling the various criminal codes of the 50 states.

Each Taser discharge is documented. The chain of command reviews the usage of the Taser. If a violation is found, a referral is made to IAD. The only other way that IAD would be involved would be from a direct complaint by a citizen.

I wish the public knew....

That all tasers could be tracked. I bet the number of complaints would go up.
