"Vote No" Ad Sterotypes African-Americans?

Allen Gwinn  2007-10-17 10:26

Apparently the Save The Trinity campaign has produced an ad stereotyping African-Americans in a campaign rap song posted on the Dallas Morning News website.

The ad raps "we against proposition one" and makes claims like voting no will "ease up on the taxes."

DEVELOPING

Who Produced It?
Anonymous (not verified)  2007-10-17 19:46

I read somewhere that the "Vote No" people didn't produce this, even though the ad says they did? Is there any way to find out for sure?

[Ed Note: Now you're just trying to get me to start on Craig Holcomb aren't you! There's really no way to tell unless someone "owns up" to it, or unless you can find it buried in the group's campaign financials.]

Racially Divisive

Its wrong to treat our white people one way and our black people another. That is why we have so many problems in S. Dallas. "Vote No" should be ashamed.

Not stereotyping

The ad is obviously for a rap station. I don't see what the big deal is about it.

If you don't see what's
RecentCoin  2007-10-17 16:03

If you don't see what's wrong with this ad, then I guess maybe if you called all the black people in Dallas "nappy headed hos" (ala Don Imus) that would be fine too.

Quite a statement

I'm Black (and maybe you are also), and I don't see a problem with it. Just don't link me with Imus.

Called me a "straight-haired mud flubber." I have no idea what that is but I'm flubbergasted!

Black and Offended
Anonymous (not verified)  2007-10-17 17:48

I have lived in Dallas all my life and take great offense to this ad. It's wrong for a bunch of white developers to keep dividing South Dallas by race. Our children pay the price every time we are used like this. This should not be about blacks and whites but about whether we all want a toll road running up the middle of a park. Does anyone know who did the song?

"Step and Fetch It" for the White Millionaires

Oh, my God, this is so hilarious! Can they make a video, too, and have a black face song and dance man for the Vote NO Campaign? Here is a list, Michael, as to what is wrong with this. Unless, of course, Dallas Progress has been bought off by the white man.

1. The history of Dallas is full of local African Americans who try to lead other blacks into voting for what the white millionaires in Highland Park want. NOTHING has changed. NOTHING.

2.The Tollway was NOT what was sold to us. The Tollway will make the Crows and a couple of other non-Dallasistes richer when their property values increase.(Harlan lives in the Big House on Preston Rd and Armstrong.)

3. Could they have at least put a verb in the sentence as they rapped?

4. If this isn't racially divisive, then I want to hear the "White" version, a country and western song. I want to hear a Latin version en Espanol with an accordion.

5. And how exactly will a tollway "ease up on taxes" for an area of Dallas where most people live in SUBSIDIZED HOUSING???

6. WHO is the rapper? Who paid for it?

7. Don't call them what Imus did, you don't have to. They do it to themselves.

Jump and dance to make the white man happy.

And don't "forgets to smile!"

[Ed Note: Just for the record, Mike Davis is a leader of positive change in South Dallas as well as North Dallas. He's young, professional, committed and has exceptionally high ethical standards. He works long hours and, in case you don't read his blog on a regular basis (http://dallasprogress.blogspot.com) you should. He is a needed voice for change that all of us should be proud to have. It is common for those of us who have blogs to occasionally have a different perspective on issues--which is why it is important to read all sides of an argument. But Mikey is a wonderful and welcome voice, and one day he may end up being mayor. He'll have my support when he decides to do it.

I also want to say I don't have a problem with anyone who votes "no" on this issue. I realize there are some people who are very committed to having some alternative to 35E headed out of downtown, and feel they need this tollroad at any cost. There are legitimate reasons to vote "no." I just hope everyone casts votes for the right reason--and not because the song had a nice beat!]

Don't be a Coward
Michael Davis  2007-10-18 07:22

Allen, this person knows exactly who I am.

Usually, I don't respond to jerks that hide behind anonymous names. But your garbage won't taint this audience since I have known Allen and most of the writers on here for years.

Are you that bitter? Do you want attention that bad? Well come get it by saying your name.

Thanks for being a coward. Keep on hiding in that glass house of yours. I needed some entertainment this evening.

Signed off with my name listed...as always.
